Podmail

PodMail, Trust Yourself (And Only Yourself)

Features

What Podmail does today

Your mail lives in your Pod

Messages are stored in your own Solid Pod rather than on someone else's mail server. Claim a free Pod-based email address, Pod and webId, or bring the Pod and webId you already have.

Read, reply, delete

Everything you need for day-to-day mail: read your inbox, compose new messages, reply to a thread, and delete what you are done with.

Talks to ordinary email

Podmail is not a walled garden. It receives mail from every provider we have tested and sends to almost all of them, so the people you write to need nothing special.

Web, desktop and mobile

Use Podmail in the browser. Desktop, iOS and Android apps coming soon. Your Pod backs all of them, so your mail follows you between devices.

Encrypted in transit and at rest

Mail is handed to and collected from other providers over TLS, and stored encrypted in your Pod.

You hold the keys

You create your secret Pod key. Your Pod mailbox access is only possible with your key. Your email is only decrypted on device. Our Podmail team and your Pod hosts cannot ready your data.

Spam filtering

Incoming mail is scored for spam the moment it arrives, before it's ever decrypted or stored in your Pod. Clear spam is rejected outright and anything suspicious filed straight into Spam instead of your inbox.

Getting Started

  • Step 1: Run the downloaded installer for your platform to install Podmail. Or try Podmail on web
  • Step 2: For new users, select ‘Register’ to get your new free Pod and webId. A Pod is your private personal online datastore that you own, and only you can access. Your webId is a global identifier just for you. Use an email address as your login, and enter your chosen password (should be unique to this app). If you already have a Pod and webId, skip this step.
  • Step 3: Enter the Server where your Pod lives, then select ‘Login’ to login with your username and password for your Pod.
  • Step 4: You will be prompted for a security key. This is the key used to encrypt your email in your Pod. Make sure you save your security key in a password manager or other safe place, as you need it to unlock your Pod each time you login to Podmail. You cannot decrypt your email if you lose your security key.
  • Step 5: For new users, the Settings page will open. Claim your free Pod-based email address.
  • Step 6: You’re ready to send and receive emails!
